Collaborative Learning: An Expert Practice for Implementing Ecosystem Management

Ecosystem management is an approach to maintaining or restoring the composition, structure and function of natural and modified ecosystems for the goal of long term sustainability.  An unprecedented scope of human impacts on coastal and ocean ecosystems - from climate change and overfishing to pollution and habitat degradation - requires a more coordinated approach to managing human activities that affect the marine environment.  The Collaborative Learning approach applies rigorous theories and practical methods to create interdisciplinary and multi-stakeholder teams to: accomplish the objectives of ecosystem-based management; conduct collaborative research; build capacity for development & implementation of science based plans; evaluate "state of the science"; and build capacity for collaborative problem solving.
