High Performance School Buildings
In this practical, results-oriented workshop, expert instructors revealed how the 'whole building' approach to design will achieve making a difference in the quality and affordability of K-12 education, design and construction of high-performance schools. The Sustainable Industry Council defines the key charcacteritics of high-performance school buildings as healthy and productive for students, teachers, and staff; cost effective; and sustainable. Workshop intsructors presented facility managers, architects and engineers with strategies for designing sustainable, high-performance schools. They discussed the integration of superior indoor air quality, acoustical and thermal comfort, accessiblity, safety and security, and other high-performance features. A second seminar was held the following day where workshop intstructors presented school officials how to hire qualified designers and how to effectively manage the design process for facilities that support better attendance and higher test scores, while contributing to employee retention and occupant health. Studies have shown a direct link between improved student performance and sustatinable design strategies such as daylightning.
